The Importance of Annual Heartworm Testing & Year-Round Prevention
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition in pets caused by parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs.
In DOGS, many will show few symptoms during the early stages of the disease. The longer the infection persists without treatment, however, dogs may develop a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite and weight loss. As the disease progresses, clinical signs will be come more severe and eventually become life-threatening.
In CATS, signs of heartworm disease are often mistaken for feline asthma, allergic bronchitis or other respiratory diseases. And, once exposed, there are no approved treatments for feline heartworm. Prevention in key.
